Florida Brewpubs Report – February 2014

It’s not just production breweries that are driving the growth of Florida’s brewing industry. There’s a lot of good beer coming from Florida’s brewpubs. To help Florida brewpubs and their supports stay informed about the industry, and as a companion to The Florida Breweries Report, we are launching the Florida Brewpubs Report.

Notes about The Florida Brewpubs Report

Some notes about the Florida Brewpubs Report:

  • We kick off the Florida Brewpubs Report with sales figures for the month of February 2014, which is the most recent month for which information is available from the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverage & Tobacco (ABT). We’ll post a new Florida Brewpubs Report soon after the ABT release new monthly information.
  • The figures on this report comes directly from the ABT’s monthly wholesale reports for February 2014. The ABT reports brewpub sales volume in gallons, but our report converts those numbers to barrels, the brewing industry standard (1 barrel = 31 gallons).
  • Because brewpubs are not legally permitted to sell to distributors, we can be reasonably certain that the ABT’s sales volume figures accurately reflect the brewpubs’ production numbers.
  • Several Florida brewpub’s have in the last year traded in their brewpub (CMBP) license for a production brewery (CMB) license. As these breweries begin reporting their sales under new brewery licenses, the numbers reported under their brewpub licenses will cease. This means that the historical information below does not tell the whole story for these breweries in transition.
  • We are not statisticians. There are probably better ways to do this, and we’re happy to hear them. Please feel free to post your comments and suggestions in the Replies section below.

Florida Brewpubs’ LTM Sales

The next table in our Florida Brewpubs Report includes the aggregate sales volume for each brewpub (in barrels) for the 12 months ending with the most recent month for which data is available. This methodology is often referred to as “Last Twelve Months”–LTM for short.

For this first Florida Brewpubs Report, the LTM period runs from March 2013 through February 2014. Many brewpubs closed or converted to production breweries during that period, so this table does not tell the full story for those brewpubs in tradition.

Florida Brewpubs’ LTM Growth

The last table in the Florida Brewpubs Report measures the growth of a brewpub’s sales volume by comparing the brewpub’s Last Twelve Months’ (LTM) sales volume through the most recent month for which data is available against the same brewpub’s LTM sales volume through the prior month. This is just one way of measuring a brewpub’s growth during the most recent month.

In this table, each brewpub’s February 2014 LTM sales volume is compared to its January 2014 LTM sales volume. For those brewpubs that stopped reporting sales under their brewpub license–either because they closed or because they converted to a CMB license–the month-to-month LTM comparison skews negative. On the other hand, this is a relatively good measure of positive or negative growth for brewpubs with a full year of reported data.
